Sewage treatment is theprocess of removing contaminants from domestic and municipal wastewater, containing mainly household sewage plus some industrial wastewater. Physical, chemical, and biological processes are used to remove contaminants and producetreated wastewater (or treated effluent) that is safe enough for release intothe environment. A by-product of sewage treatment is a semi-solid waste orslurry, called sewage sludge. The sludge has to undergo further treatmentbefore being suitable for disposal or application to land.
Sewage treatment mayalso be referred to as wastewater treatment. However, the latter is a broaderterm that can also refer to industrial wastewater. For most cities, the sewersystem will also carry a proportion of industrial effluent to the sewagetreatment plant that has usually received pre-treatment at the factories toreduce the pollutant load. If the sewer system is a combined sewer, then itwill also carry urban runoff (stormwater) to the sewage treatment plant. Sewageis conveyed in sewerage which comprises the drains, pipework and pumps toconvey the sewage to the treatment works inlet.
